The first Semi-Finals of the Australian Open have been decided.
In the men’s draw Britain’s Kyle Edmund will face a tough test against Grand Slam winning Marin Cilic (CRO). Edmund won his Quarter-Final against 3rd seed Grigor Dimitrov (BUL) in convincing style 6-4 3-6 6-3 6-4. He looked composed and in control throughout, showing maturity and clarity that bodes well for his future.
It would be unfair to say Cilic came through because World number 1 Rafael Nadal (ESP) retired. Cilic played exceptional tennis, making Nadal work hard for every point, and it was that work that forced the retirement, as the former champion’s body failed.
In the women’s draw Elise Mertens (BEL) dismantled 4th seed Elina Svitolina (UKR) 6-4 6-0 in only 73 minutes. The surprise of the women’s draw is undefeated in 2018 and will be looking to end the hopes of former world number 1 Caroline Wozniacki (DEN). The 2nd seed looked to be sending a message as she took the first set 6-0 against Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro, however the diminutive Spaniard found her feet in the second set and played some of the tennis of the tournament to force a third set, despite having faced match points. Wozniacki pushed back in the third and Suarez Navarro faded as she understandably became tired from the incredible rallies.
