With Andy Murray leaving the tournament, all British hopes were with 6th seed Johanna Konta (GBR) as she battled fellow big server 10th seed Venus Williams (USA). In the serving statistics there was little to separate the two, but the returning of the five time Wimbledon champion was stronger, putting Konta’s serve under pressure. The match of the day saw 2nd seed Simona Halep (ROU) take on 6th seed and home crowd favourite Johanna Konta (GBR). The two had met on the tour a number of times, notably in this year’s Miami Open quarter final which Konta won, and made Halep’s coach walk away from the Romanian. This was the tightest match of the tournament with each game hotly contested and the scoreboard was reflective of that.
Number 1 seed Angelique Kerber (GER) faced a tough challenge if she was to progress into the quarters past 14th seed and former finalist Garbine Muguruza (ESP). Muguruza, who is being guided by former champion and legend Conchita Martinez, has found form in this tournament. Again the ladies showed the gentlemen how to put on a show. Home talent Heather Watson (GBR) and returning former semi-finalist Victoria Azarenka (BLR) left it all on court in a 3 set battle of highs and lows. Watson stormed the first set 6-3, and in a closer fought second set than the score suggested, Azarenka took it 6-1.
