The match of the day saw 2nd seed Simona Halep (ROU) take on 6th seed and home crowd favourite Johanna Konta (GBR). The two had met on the tour a number of times, notably in this year’s Miami Open quarter final which Konta won, and made Halep’s coach walk away from the Romanian. This was the tightest match of the tournament with each game hotly contested and the scoreboard was reflective of that.
Number 1 seed and two time Wimbledon Champion Andy Murray (GBR) has made it to the quarter finals an impressive 9 times. Today he made it 10 beating Benoit Paire (FRA) who was into the fourth round of Wimbledon for the first time. After a tight first set featuring 4 breaks of serve, the Frenchman forced a tie break with the world number 1, but played a howler of a tie break getting just one point. Number 1 seed Angelique Kerber (GER) faced a tough challenge if she was to progress into the quarters past 14th seed and former finalist Garbine Muguruza (ESP). Muguruza, who is being guided by former champion and legend Conchita Martinez, has found form in this tournament. The pair served up a spectacular show of bruising ralleys, Muguruza hitting what would have been winners against most players. Continue reading “The 7th Day at Wimbledon 2017 Ladies’ Draw”
Number 1 seed Angelique Kerber (GER) had to dig deep to get past Shelby Rogers (USA) after the American took the first set 6-4. She fought hard to get the second set to a tie break and showed great composure to take it 7-2. The German made a poor start to the third set but came back to win it 6-4. She’ll face 14th seed and former finalist Garbine Muguruza (ESP) who is in imperious form, not yet dropping a set, beating Sorana Cristea (ROU) 6-2 6-2. 2nd seed Novak Djokovic (SRB) got over an early lapse in concentration to beat Ernests Gulbis (LAT) in straight sets 6-4 6-1 7-6. At the beginning of the match Djokovic felt aggrieved after being denied a challenge by the chair, and the very next point he needed the challenge again, this time getting it, and it going his way. He remonstrated with the chair umpire about line calls and challenges, ironically telling the umpire to “focus” before losing all focus himself, dropping his serve immediately after. Number 1 seed Andy Murray (GBR) faced 28th seed Fabio Fognini (ITA), both of whom are known to have the occasional outburst on court. Murray raced to a 1 set lead 6-2 only for the momentum to swing the Italian’s way in the second, taking it 6-4. Murray seemed to be back on track as he took the third set 6-1 but yet again the Italian came back. Continue reading “The 5th Day at Wimbledon 2017 Gentlemen’s Singles Draw”
Again the ladies showed the gentlemen how to put on a show. Home talent Heather Watson (GBR) and returning former semi-finalist Victoria Azarenka (BLR) left it all on court in a 3 set battle of highs and lows. Watson stormed the first set 6-3, and in a closer fought second set than the score suggested, Azarenka took it 6-1. The final set was always going to be difficult for Watson with her relative inexperience at this stage. Continue reading “The 5th Day at Wimbledon 2017 Ladies’ Singles Draw”
2nd seed Novak Djokovic (SRB) breezed past Adam Pavlasek (CZE) 6-2 6-2 6-1 without breaking a sweat and will be surprised to see that his next opponent is not Juan Martin Del Potro (ARG). The 29th seed crashed out of the tournament in straight sets 6-4 6-4 7-6 to world number 589 Ernests Gulbis (LAT) who is also coming back from injury. Continue reading “The 4th Day at Wimbledon 2017 Gentlemen’s Singles Draw”
In the best match of the day, world number 87 Magdalena Rybarikova (SVK) pulled off a remarkable win over this year’s number 1 player and my favourite to win Karolina Pliskova (CZE). The 3rd seed played well in the first set and everything seemed regulation. Continue reading “The 4th Day at Wimbledon 2017 Ladies’ Singles Draw”
Jack Sock has put a nice pic of his gear on Instagram. There’s a roll of Bablolat Poly sitting there, but am I spying natural gut in the mains?
