The match of the day saw 2nd seed Simona Halep (ROU) take on 6th seed and home crowd favourite Johanna Konta (GBR). 2nd seed Novak Djokovic (SRB) got over an early lapse in concentration to beat Ernests Gulbis (LAT) in straight sets 6-4 6-1 7-6. At the beginning of the match Djokovic felt aggrieved after being denied a challenge by the chair, and the very next point he needed the challenge again, this time getting it, and it going his way. He remonstrated with the chair umpire about line calls and challenges, ironically telling the umpire to “focus” before losing all focus himself, dropping his serve immediately after. Again the ladies showed the gentlemen how to put on a show. Home talent Heather Watson (GBR) and returning former semi-finalist Victoria Azarenka (BLR) left it all on court in a 3 set battle of highs and lows. Watson stormed the first set 6-3, and in a closer fought second set than the score suggested, Azarenka took it 6-1. The final set was always going to be difficult for Watson with her relative inexperience at this stage. Continue reading “The 5th Day at Wimbledon 2017 Ladies’ Singles Draw”
