Ladies’ Singles First Round Round-up

The number 1 seed Angelique Kerber (GER) made simple work of her first round match against the world number 247 Irina Falconi (USA), despatching her in straight sets 6-4 6-4 in just under 90 minutes.

2nd seed, and a favourite to win, Simona Halep (ROU) cruised through to the second round beating Marina Erakovic (NZL) 6-4 6-1.

The 3rd seed, and my favourite to win the tournament, Karolina Plitskova (CZE) is safely through to the second round after beating world number 80 Evgeniya Rodina (RUS) 6-1 6-4.

4th seed and possible winner Elina Svitolina (UKR) went through after beating world number 56 Ashleigh Barty (AUS) 7-5 7-6.

5th seed Caroline Wozniacki is through after beating world number 42 Timea Babos (HUN) in 3 sets 6-4 4-6 6-1.

Britain’s 6th seed Johanna Konta faced the opponent who knocked her out in the first round of the French Open Su-Wei Hsieh (TPE). This time Konta made it through in straight forward fashion 6-2 6-2.

The 7th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS) made short work of qualifier world number 106 Ons Jabeur (TUN) 6-3 6-2.

8th seed Dominika Cibulkova (SVK) is through after battling past world number 90 Adrea Petkovic (GER) 6-3 3-6 9-7.

The 9th seed and world number 10 Agnieszka Radwanska (POL) struggled past former world number 1 Jelena Jankovic (SRB) in a tough first set where she didn’t play her best tennis. The set took its toll on Jankovic who played the remainder of the match clearly restricted by an injury to her back, resulting in a lacklustre end to the match 7-6 6-0.

Former champion and 10th seed Venus Williams (USA) makes her way into the second round after beating world number 54 Elise Mertens (BEL) 7-6 6-4.

11th seed, and everyone’s favourite to win after making a remarkable comeback, Petra Kvitova (CZE) is through after beating world number 53 Johanna Larsson (SWE) 6-3 6-4.

The 12th seed Kristina Mladenovic (FRA) is safely through as she beat fellow Frenchwoman world number 83 Pauline Parmentier (FRA) in straight sets 6-1 6-3.

French Open Winner and 13th seed Jelena Ostapenko (LAT) goes through after beating world number 89 Aliaksandra Sasnovich (BEL) in typical erratic style 6-1 0-6 6-3.

2015 runner up and 14th seed Garbine Muguruza (ESP) eased past world number 75 Ekaterina Alexandrova (RUS) 6-2 6-4.

15th seed Elena Vesnina (RUS) goes through after beating qualifier and fellow Russian Anna Blinkova 6-4 5-7 6-2.

16th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (RUS) made a shock exit after losing her 2:31 mins first round tie with qualifier Arina Rodionova (AUS). The world number 166 came through 3-6 7-6 9-7.

17th seed Madison Keys (USA) is also through after beating world number 92 Nao Hibino (JPN) 6-4 6-2.

18th seed Anastasija Sevastova (LAT) is safely through, beating world number 43 Yulia Putintseva (KAZ) 6-1 7-6.

The 19th seed Timea Bacsinszky (SUI) had a tough first round draw against the Olympic champion Monica Puig (PUR). She came through against a tricky opponent 6-1 3-6 6-0.

Another seed to fall was the 20th seed Daria Gavrilova (AUS) who lost to qualifier world number 135 Petra Martic (CRO) in an epic 3 set match that took almost 3 hrs and ended 6-4 2-6 10-8.

21st seed Caroline Garcia (FRA) is safely through after beating world number 91 Jana Cepelova (SVK) 6-1 6-1.

22nd seed Barbora Strycova goes through after beating world number 85 Veronica Cepede Royg (PAR) 6-3 6-3.

Kiki Bertens (NED) the 23rd seed and world number 27 was knocked out of the tournament by the world number 63 Sorana Cirstea (ROU) in straight sets 7-6 7-5.

Charismatic 24th seed Coco Vandeweghe is through after easing past world number 48 Mona Barthel (GER) 7-5 6-2.

25th seed Carla Suarez-Navarro (ESP) battled past tricky first round opponent and former finalist Eugene Bouchard (CAN) 1-6 6-1 6-1.

26th seed Mirjana Lucic-Baroni (CRO) has been knocked out by world number 65 Carina Witthoeft (GER) 6-3 5-7 8-6.

27th seed Ana Konjuh (CRO) is through after despatching the former finalist Sabine Lisicki (GER) in straight sets 6-1 6-4.

28th seed Lauren Davis (USA) has left the tournament after being beaten by fellow American world number 68 Varvara Lepchenko 6-4 7-5.

29th seed Daria Kasatkina (RUS) is through after beating world number 71 Saisai Zheng (CHN) 6-2 6-4.

World number 73 Viktorija Golubic (SUI) knocked out the 30th seed Shuai Zhang (CHN) 6-3 6-7 6-1.

31st seed Roberta Vinci (ITA) has been knocked out by Kristyna Pliskova (CZE) 7-6 6-2. Not to be confused with her twin sister and 4th seed Karolina.

Lucie Safarova (CZE) the 32nd seed went through comfortably 6-2 6-2 against world number 49 Oceane Dodin (FRA).

Victoria Azarenka (BLR), playing under a protected ranking after the birth of her first child, returns to the second round after beating world number 40 Catherine Bellis (USA) 3-6 6-2 6-1.

Britain’s Heather Watson is safely through beating Maryna Zanevska (BEL) 6-1 7-6.
