In the match of the day, 6th seed Johanna Konta (GBR) faced Donna Vekic (CRO) who beat her to the Nottingham Aegon Championship just 2 weeks previous. In a thrilling first set, Vekic broke Konta late in the set but Konta broke straight back forcing the pair into a tie-break, which Konta won 7-4. The effort of winning the first set showed as Konta served first in the second set and was immediately broken. Vekic maintained the break to the end of the high quality second set, taking it 6-4. Number 1 seed Andy Murray (GBR) kicked off his Wimbledon campaign in style, beating charismatic 20 year old Alexander Bublik (KAZ) 6-1 6-4 6-2.
2nd seed Novak Djokovic (SRB) only had to win one set before Martin Klizan (SVK) retired. Final score 6-3 2-2.
The number 1 seed Angelique Kerber (GER) made simple work of her first round match against the world number 247 Irina Falconi (USA), despatching her in straight sets 6-4 6-4 in just under 90 minutes.
2nd seed, and a favourite to win, Simona Halep (ROU) cruised through to the second round beating Marina Erakovic (NZL) 6-4 6-1.
